LGBTIQA
UH Hilo welcomes students of all sexual orientations and gender identities. There is an LGBTQ+ Center on campus, which hosts social gatherings and organizes various programs and activities for LGBTIQA (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, and asexual) students and their allies. If you are part of the LGBTIQA community or an ally who supports the community, know that the University strives to provide a welcoming and safe environment for you. Traditional Hawaiian culture prior to colonization and the introduction of Christianity was characterized by an openness and acceptance of relationship diversity, including same-gender relationships; in the spirit of honoring the indigenous culture and LGBTIQA students, UH Hilo attempts to honor this tradition.
