Estimated Expenses
Hilo is a small city with a moderate cost of living. The University estimates that you will need about $1,400 per month for all living expenses including housing, books for classes, food, transportation, and other personal expenses. This estimate is based on average costs for housing and food. Actual costs can vary based on where you live and your personal spending habits.
When you first arrive, you will need enough money to pay for your tuition and fees, initial housing payment (rent and security deposit if you will be living off-campus), as well as money for books, items for your room, and perhaps a cell phone. These costs may make the first month’s expenses two or three times the normal monthly cost.
